Find your family safety in the 2017 Kia Sedona

2017 Kia Sedona IIHS Top Safety Pick Rating

When you think of the perfect family vehicle, there are probably a number of points on your checklist that need to be covered. Interior space is a big one, as you can expect to tote around the whole family as well as friends, but safety is also at the top of most lists. Which is why we’re pleased to say that the 2017 Kia Sedona, a minivan many look to for family adventures, just received a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick rating.

What does it take to earn a Top Safety Pick+ Rating?

With so many awards out there, it can be hard to tell them apart. The Top Safety Pick+ rating is given out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to vehicles that have standard or available features to help prevent forward collisions. Which isn’t to say that all models with these driver assistance features are eligible, because a model must also meet all the criteria for the standard Top Safety Pick rating. To earn this, a model is test for small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side impact tests, roof strength and head restraints, and earn a minimum of a “good” rating for each, along with a basic rating for front crash prevention. The extra + is given to models with an advanced or superior rating for crash prevention.

The minivan segment is possibly the one where shoppers are most concerned about safety, and they are frequently purchased for families. The 2017 Kia Sedona is available with Autonomous Emergency Braking, which is a system that provides audible warnings to drivers when an object is too close, and then applies brakes automatically if no action is taken by the driver. This helps prevent accidents and lessens damage in instances where braking fully is not possible.

In addition to the Top Safety Pick+ rating, the 2017 Kia Sedona has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Institute for Highway safety, another highly respected agency that tests vehicles for their crash results.
