The hybrid Optima is different from the plug-in Optima in that it still primarily uses gasoline and doesn’t require electrical charging for power. Hybrid cars run, drive, and feel like traditional vehicles and most of their differences go unnoticed except, of course, their fuel economies. The Kia Optima Hybrid utilizes an electric motor that works in sync with a traditional gas engine. The electric motor eases the pressure and workload on the engine. Due to this technology, the Optima Hybrid averages a whopping 42 combined MPG and up to 46 on the highway.

The engine under the hood of the hybrid Optima is understandably smaller than the regular Optima. The standard engine under the Optima’s hood is a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline-four-cylinder engine. The hybrid version features a 2.0-liter I4 engine that is powered by 154 horses. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little bit of power in order to save a ton of money at the gas pumps, we recommended that you do so. The hybrid Optima also features a smaller fuel tank of 15.9 gallons compared to the Optima’s 18.5-gallon tank.
