Whether you want to believe it or not, car accidents are far, far more common than plane crashes. You are, in fact, much more likely to get into an accident driving a car than you are in any other mode of transportation. We’re not trying to scare you, we’re just giving you the facts. Car accidents are often caused by just a few different things, so we are going to go over the common causes so you know what to avoid.

This is a broad category and it covers many different causes. Common distractions include texting, eating, futzing with monitors, and even talking too much. Reckless driving can be a result of distracted driving. Swerving in and out of lanes is terribly unsafe and can lead to collisions. Drunk driving is included in this category and it is the most avoidable cause of car accidents. After a night of drinking, just call an Uber, it isn’t that hard. Drunk driving takes thousands of lives every year, many of which were innocent bystanders struck by a drunk motorist. Don’t ever drink and drive.

Speeding counts as reckless driving, but it’s a special kind that deserves attention because a large percentage of vehicle accidents are caused by high speeds. When you go too fast, you are reducing your reaction time. Don’t go more than 5 or 6 mph above the posted speed limit and you will have more time to react to the unexpected.
Heavy rain, snow, or sleet makes driving very difficult. If you get caught in bad weather, it’s best to pull over and let it pass before continuing, but that might not always be an option. Take it extra slow and turn on your hazards when visibility gets low.
