The most important thing to remember about your car seat is that the safest possible spot for it is in the center back seat. Why is that? Well, any passenger is actually safer in a centrally placed seat than anywhere else. By sitting in the middle, you won’t take in as much force from a side impact. Studies have found that children of three years and younger are 43% safer sitting in the middle than on either side in the back seat. However, those same studies have also found that the most common placement of car seats is behind the front passenger seat. While this placement gives the driver ample accessibility to the child, it leaves the child exposed to increased dangers.
It should be noted that sometimes, there are difficulties experienced with positioning your car seat in the center. Most vehicles include LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). This is a convenient way to attach the car seat without having to use seatbelts. Sometimes, the LATCH system doesn’t work for the center seat. If you insist on using LATCH and you aren’t able to also use the center seat, we recommended that you place the car seat behind the front passenger seat. That way, the car seat is away from traffic if you are parked on the side of the road.
